About us

What is Beyond the blue?

Beyond the Blue is a repository of dreams, hopes, suffering, and recollections.
It is a kaleidoscope of voices, stories, shouts, and tears, a colourful mosaic which straddles the prison walls and the far-away line of the horizon.

The aim of Beyond the Blue is to create a bridge for this colourful mosaic so it can be seen under a different light, one which reveals different layers of meaning about the concepts it shines on: “migrants”, “refugees”, “dinghies”, “externalisation”, “borders”. It aspires to be a place overflowing with humanity, where every single person can shorten the distance they think separates them from something far away from home. A place where they can debate and reflect, finding an answer to countless questions. A place where indifference is replaced by far-reaching empathy.

This space brings together people who do not have to dream of other views and those who always saw their hopes crystallising and then vanishing, like some mythical creature. Here, the first group can understand their counterparts, while the second group can realise their dreams. Our aim is to transform these unrealised bodies – which have always existed, suffered, hoped, and aspired to be more – into real people, and not just numbers representing a vague danger. These voices all have an identity, and we want to give them visibility: a visibility which was outright denied to them. For no apparent reason, an inhumane decision.

The heart of the matter is that nobody ever cares about giving these people a voice or listening to their anguished voices. Everyone, however, speaks of an elusive “invasion of illegal immigrants”, day in, day out, as though they weren’t human beings with a face, voice, and identity.

After years of listening to these voices in the silence of our rooms and collective consciousness, we believe the time has come to be their megaphone. This is what Beyond the Blue aims to be.
